Active Recall
The circuitry in Active Recall is a mesh of neon lamp based relaxation oscillators. As electronic components, the response of neon lamps to changes of voltage or current is very non-linear. This characteristic allows building oscillators with the lamp as the main component. Resistors and capacitors complete the functionality of the neons. Each oscillator lamp is connected to two or three neigbors. This creates a mesh of feedback loops and interdependancies which make it impossible to say at ant time what the firing pattern of the neons will be. The term I would apply to this arrangement is "chaotic function generator".
