An Inductive Proximity Switches senses the presence of metal positioned at its face. These sensors  are commonly used to home motion systems, or generally to indicate to a controller the presence of some metal object. The sensing distance  of Inductive Proximity Switches tends to be in the range of a few millimeters.
Inductive Proximity Switches are available at most industrial supply houses, and some  electrical  and electronic suppliers.  See the sources page for possible vendors.
