Photocells are variable resistors whose resistance changes with light. They are not directional, but can be made so by putting the cell at the back end of a small diameter, black, cardboard or paper tube. Photocells come in many ranges of sensitivity and resistance. Cells that are about 1 Megohm in the dark seem to be the most versitile. This type of photocell is usually made from a semiconducting material called cadmium sulfide.
Photocells are available at Jameco and other electronics suppliers listed in the sources page .
