This is a Permanent Magnet (PM) DC Motor.
PM motors are variable speed and reversible. The switch with the red
ON-ON label in the pictures above is the direction switch. Most small
PM motors run on 24 volts or less. Motor speed is proportional to
voltage. Motor current is proportional to torque. This is illustrated
by the lamp going brighter when the rotation of the motor shaft is
forcibly restrained in the last photo.

PM motors are very expensive when
purchased new, but several surplus suppliers are good sources. Some of
