Kinetics Facility

The Kinetics Lab, located in the basement of the 112 building is a basic mechatronics facility which supports a wide variety of technical object-making needs. Microcontroller programming is supported with five workstations. For machining there are tools for sanding and grinding, a metal lathe, milling machine, mig welder, and various types of saws and drill presses. The main focus of the machining facility is making parts that fit together, but we do not thinks of ouselves as a "shop". The Columbus drive wood and metal shops are large, general-purpose, general-access facilities which serves that well understood need set. The Kinetics facility on the other hand, attempts to cater to blue-sky experimentalism.

Started in 1969, the Kinetics Lab is the oldest facility of its kind in the country.

The office of the kinetics lab houses hundreds of components, power supplies, and test equipment for teaching electronics, kinetics, and technology art making.

Aside from the equipment and tools available for students and teaching there are shelves and shelves of decommissioned equipment from all over campus available from which students can learn to reclaim mechanical and electrical sub-assemblies and components for use in making art.
